Ethics and Laws
Ethics and laws differ in that ethics are social guidelines based on moral principles and values, while laws are rules or regulations that have penalties or consequences when violated. All healthcare workers are faced with ethical and legal decisions at one time or another. Situations may be legal but not ethical, and vice versa. Always try to be fair and honest. When faced with making an ethical decision, ask yourself these type of questions:
Does your decision foster a “win-win” situation with the patient and my supervisor?
How would I feel about myself if I read this decision in the newspaper?
Can I live with my decision?
Is the action legal?
